Profile of The Wye Valley Hotel and Surrounding Area.

The History of the Wye Valley Hotel dates back to 1835 when part of the current building was known as "The Carpenters Arms Public House". Tintern was then an industrial iron-making valley of 6,000 people. The Hotel was renamed in 1909 and extended to its current form.

The Hotel is owned and managed by Sue and Barry Cooke who previously ran hotels and licensed premises around Oxford.

Ideally placed between the two historic towns of Monmouth and Chepstow, Tintern is at the heart of the Wye Valley and all the attractions it has to offer.

The poet Wordsworth described Wye as "The most romantic valley in Wales". Little has changed since he penned those lines and the Wye River still wends its way by Tintern, its Abbey and forests.

Tintern is situated on both the Wye Valley and Offas Dyke Walks, with many picturesque short walks in the area including the steep climb to the Devil's Pulpit to enjoy the spectacular view of Tintern Abbey Below. Built by Cisterian monks in the 12th century, and only a short walk from the hotel the world famous Tintern Abbey may have been looted by Henry VIII during the reformation, but still exudes an air of spirituality and tranquility. As one of the most faithfully preserved ruins in Britain, the Abbey is open throughout the year, and has many scheduled events and festivities.
